Job Search Tips: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

I took a day trip into New York City last weekend and noticed an interesting trend among job seekers: people are getting creative. I hopped in a cab to go downtown and the first thing I noticed was the cab driver's resume, strategically placed at eye level so backseat passengers couldn’t miss it. Now, I certainly don’t mind reading up on my cabbie, but the fact that he once managed a team of fifty at some Fortune 500 company doesn’t provide me with the reassurance that he’s going to get me to my destination in one piece. By the end of the day, I read up on three more cab drivers. Creative idea? Yes. Likely to produce results? Probably not.

Once I got to Chinatown, I noticed another creative job search tactic: the resume shirt. I was amazed at the personal information (phone numbers, email addresses) that people freely put on the backs of their shirts. I wouldn’t feel comfortable showing the whole city how to get in contact with me, but again, in the effort to find a job, it’s definitely creative.

In the days following my New York trip, I came across this entertaining slide show, appropriately titled, “10 Ridiculously Desperate Job Seekers,” and thought about how far some people will go to find employment. I commend these people for their creativity and perseverance, but sometimes taking the more traditional route reaps the best results. 

Yeah, I know what you’re probably thinking. There have been success stories out there. There was that girl who stood outside of Oprah’s office building with a “hire me” sign and snagged a job, and Ted Williams, the once-homeless man with the “golden voice” who now has several impressive offers to be a professional announcer. But let’s face it: These stories are few and far between. 

If you’re like me and think the aforementioned creative job-seeking tactics don’t always yield results, try these traditional job search strategies instead:
  1. Get in contact with recruiters and employment agencies.
  2. Post your resume on job boards.
  3. Work your network. Make sure your LinkedIn profile is up to date and your online presence is tamed. And don’t forget about good old-fashioned networking events.
  4. Check out the Facebook job board. It’s becoming more popular and is growing quickly.
  5. Don’t be afraid to apply to internships first. They are more likely to turn into full-time offers.
  6. Don’t be afraid of externships. Shadowing an employer for a few days will get you in the door and in front of the right people.
  7. Tap into your alumni network and your college career center.
