Running Against the Wind
I am an English major looking for a finance internship. How does a liberal arts major get an interview against all the business majors?
Answer
Business majors will have the clear advantage, but all is not lost. Liberal arts majors have critical business skills including:
• The ability to learn by thinking through issues/exceptional problem-solving, creative thinking and communication skills
• The variety in learning so you can go anywhere and do anything
• True passion for something you love to do (e.g. the major you chose)
• Strong teamwork and leadership skills
• The ability to conduct research and organize it clearly and effectively
• The ability to meet goals and deadlines, while managing time effectively
Make sure your cover letter sells your liberal arts background. Don’t assume that recruiters will make the case for you.
