How do I balance wanting to make a good impression by working late with having a personal life outside the office?
Answer
It should all be about the bottom line and producing quality work. Face time should be a non-issue. But the world isn’t perfect so other things need to be considered. Before you have any conversations about balancing working late with having a personal life, observe the following:
• What does your boss do?
• What do the top performers do?
• What do the ones that have a great relationship with your boss do?
• Who leaves at a decent hour and checks emails during the evening? Who does neither?
As you get the answers to these questions, assess what you can get done in the office versus at home. If you can manage to pump out exceptional work and leave at a decent time, speak to your boss confidentially. This is not an issue you should discuss with your co-workers.
