Addressing the 'Life' Side of Work-Life Balance
How do I ask about work/life balance without seeming like a slacker?
Answer
Wait until you feel confident that your target employer is sold on you before asking about lifestyle or other benefits. This way, you keep the focus on your skills and interests for as long as possible. In the meantime, connect with people who used to work at the company to inquire about benefits; they’ll know firsthand and won’t hold back on the truth. Find these people via your social network, school alumni groups, or online message boards (but take responses from strangers with a grain of salt).
Know that many employers are increasingly aware of the importance of work/life to employees, also, so they often advertise, boast about, or at least bring up their policies during the recruitment process. When they do, have your questions prepared.Oh, and don’t forget to keep the work part of the equation in your discussions about work-life balance by reiterating your interest in the position and the company.
