The Undercover Job Search

How do I research lateral opportunities without my boss finding out?

Answer

First find out what your company’s policies are regarding lateral transfers, if they have a policy. Many of the larger companies insist that you stay in your position for at least one year; others post internal listings on an intranet and allow employees to apply without having to tell their boss.

If there is no central database of jobs, you will need to ask around at the departments you are interested in. Have lunch or happy hour drinks with people in different departments – your boss can’t begrudge you for having a social life. In fact, many companies work hard to promote networking between their employees. Try joining company social groups or affinity networks as another way of meeting people. Ask for informational meetings to find out more about the different departments in your company. But remember: Be sure to tell everyone that you are happy where you are but just learning about the company. Don’t confide your search plans to anyone until you know them and know they won’t tell your boss.
