There wouldn't be much Southern comfort without the Southern Company. The Georgia-based company is one of the largest producers of electricity in the United States. In addition to owning four regulated utilities, Southern Company also owns the unregulated power company Southern Power, through which it constructs, acquires, and owns generating facilities and sells the output to wholesale purchasers. The firm also operates Southern Nuclear, which supplies services to Southern Company's nuclear power plants; Southern LINC, a wireless communications company; and Southern Telecom, a fiber-optics company.
