NBC Universal was created in 2004 by the combination of NBC and Vivendi Universal Entertainment. Its NBC Universal Television Stations division comprises 10 NBC television stations in major U.S. television markets, along with 15 Telemundo stations and one independent Spanish-language television station. Its NBC Universal Television Studio produces TV programming. Its Universal Pictures arm is a major Hollywood motion picture studio. Its Universal Parks & Resorts business’s properties include Universal Studios Hollywood, which includes Universal CityWalk; Universal Studios Florida; three premier hotels, Universal Studios Japan in Osaka; and Universal Mediterranea near Barcelona, Spain.
In 2008, NBC Universal and two partners reached a deal to buy The Weather Channel from Landmark Communications Inc. In addition to The Weather Channel, which can be seen by 97 percent of US cable subscribers, the deal also includes several related assets such as weather services for newspapers and radio stations and the widely used Web site Weather.com.
