Restructured as a holding company after deregulation to allow for expansion into new and diverse businesses, Consolidated Edison, Inc., operates through several subsidiaries. The Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc., better known as Con Ed, is the largest subsidiary and provides customers in New York City and Westchester County with electricity, natural gas, and steam services. Orange & Rockland Utilities, serving Orange and Rockland Counties, is Con Ed’s other regulated utility. The company serves 3.4 million customers electricity in New York City; 1.1 million customers get Con Ed gas. It also serves 1,800 customers with steam—mostly large office and apartment buildings and hospitals south of 96th Street in Manhattan.
