American Power Conversion (APC) Corporation offers power protection, environmental control, and site monitoring services—ranging from surge protectors for PCs, to network enclosures, to industrial-strength computer-room air conditioning units. The company focuses on four markets: home and home office, business networks, access provider networks, and data centers and facilities. APC products are sold in more than 150 countries through a network of computer resellers and dealers. Demand for its products continues to grow as computer and Internet use spreads especially in parts of the world with unreliable electrical power. However, the company recently restructured operations and reduced its worldwide workforce by 7 percent. At the end of October 2006, the company announced that French rival Schneider Electric has agreed to acquire APC in a deal that is supposed to close in 2007, and APC would become part of that company’s network if and when that deal is completed.
