Don't like injections? Neither does Alza. The company specializes in developing drug delivery platforms using oral, transdermal, implantable and liposomal technologies, intended as easy, comfortable alternatives to painful injections. Since its founding in 1968 by Dr. Alejandro Zaffaroni, Alza's technologies have been incorporated in 30 commercial products available in 80 countries; more than 3,000 patents are active or pending. Recent and upcoming drug delivery technologies include implant and electrotransport systems, which offer alternatives to the injections currently used to administer proteins, peptides, and new large-molecule biotechnology products. The company also manufactures pharmaceuticals, focusing mainly on urology, oncology, and central nervous system treatments. Current pharmaceutical products include Ditropan XL, the only once-daily treatment in the United States for overactive bladder; Duragesic, a treatment for chronic pain; and Concerta, a treatment for attention deficit disorder.
