Akin Gump Strauss Hauer and Feld is certainly not lacking in national visibility or press coverage. In the past several years, the enormous law firm has been involved in such major U.S. news stories as the Clinton impeachment proceedings (partner Vernon Jordan is a well-known Clinton confidante) and the impeachment of David Brock as Chief Justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court (Brock was acquitted on behalf of Akin Gump lawyers). With more than 1000 attorneys in its 17 offices, Akin Gump is one of the world’s largest law firms. Founded in Dallas in 1945, Akin Gump moved its headquarters when Texas underwent a recession in the 1980s. About a third of its attorneys now practice at the Washington, D.C., headquarters. Litigation is Akin Gump's largest division; typical cases involve antitrust, tort, or white-collar criminal defense law. The firm also specializes in public law and policy, labor and corporate practices, lobbying, and intellectual property. The past several years have seen expansion in Akin Gump’s technology and intellectual property practices. Early in 2003, the firm announced that it was expanding its London office, signaling international growth in its financial restructuring, investment funds, and emerging markets practices.
