AMR Corporation doesn't just want to move people. This company wants to move information. It all started with American Airlines (AA), now the number one air carrier in the United States and the world. As AA grew, AMR developed a wealth of other skills and products such as logistics management, employee training, and investment services to support the airline and its employees. AA jets were hijacked and used in the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The subsequent reduction in airline traffic forced the company to cut about 20 percent of its flights and lay off at least 20,000 employees (about 17 percent of the company’s workforce). In November of that same year, another AA jet crashed in Queens, New York, killing 265 people. After flirting with bankruptcy and running for several years at a reduced capacity, AMR is in expansion mode again, beefing up AA service to China. Still, the company is looking to cut fuel costs, and reduce its capacity, fleet, and workforce.
