AMC Entertainment

Company Overview

Highlights

More than 75 percent of AMC’s theatres are megaplexes with at least 14 screens that feature stadium-style seating.

Invented the world’s first cupholder armrest in 1981.

AMC Entertainment is the holding company of American Multi-Cinema, Inc. (AMC); AMC International, Inc.; National Network Cinema, Inc.; and AMC Realty, Inc. The company operates more than 415 theaters housing 5,672 screens in the United States and eight other countries. AMC has nearly doubled the number of theaters in its grasp in the last four years alone. AMC’s theaters are even bigger than the drinks they sell; the company remains at the forefront of developing megaplexes of 14 or more screens with stadium-style seating and state-of-the-art sound systems. It branched beyond bricks and mortar by teaming up with five other companies to launch MovieTickets.com, an online ticket booth and movie listing website. In slower economic times, it seems that many people still head to the movies, particularly at AMC theaters. While many of its competitors are filing for bankruptcy reorganization, AMC is continuing to expand through acquisitions. In 2002, the company acquired Gulf States Theaters, adding 68 megaplex screens to its portfolio. In early 2003, AMC bought General Cinema Theaters out of bankruptcy, adding another 621 screens in the United States and 160 in South America. And in 2006, AMC picked up venerable competitor Loews Cineplex. The company has also adopted a program popular with many other chains by introducing the AMC Entertainment Card, a debit card-type gift certificate.
